I don’t carry an alternate light source. I may try experimenting with that.

when I was in NY and there were plenty of polypores around. Your shots make me wonder if you could illuminate the pores from the back side with a strong enough light. I could never shoot deep enough into a pore, although the macro could see in there, it was just too dark. With a red polypore that could yield an interesting effect.
