HABITAT edge of oak forest on ridge at top of road cut high on north slope; SUBSTRATE Quercus chrysolepis trunk; ASPECT mostly open; NOTES thin verrucose light gray crust, K+y C- KC- P+ pale yellow-orange UV- 350nm, abundant crowded apothecia, disk dark brown to black, rims thin prominent thalline smooth even becoming thinner in age, epihymenium dark brown with coarse POL+ crystals on top clearing in K, hymenium hyaline POL-, hypothecium hyaline POL-, ampthithecium with large POL+ crystals persist in K and fine crystals clearing in K, algae layer somewhat discontinuous, cortex not much basally thickened; SPORES 8 per ascus, simple, smooth, hyaline, ellipsoid, ~13-16 × 7-8 µm.
Primary problem with this identification is that the disks are too dark, but otherwise it matches up.
