Recognized by sight: I believe the only way to be certain that confusus is not causing confusion is to examine the spores under very high magnification.

The staining on this specimen…

took a couple minutes to really set in. I see reddish/coral bruising on most (if not all) of the Strobilomyces I examine.

Bessette Roody & Bessette cover three species. All bruise orange or red on the cap flesh and two turn blackish ( floccopus and confusus)

Really? Where?

I see the quote marks, but cannot place them. In Smith, Smith & Weber, S. floccopus is said to stain reddish then black in the context. But no mention is made of staining for the other 2 species mentioned. In Arora, S. floccopus flesh described as “…whitish, usually turning reddish (often slowly) when bruised, then dark brownish to black.” Ditto tubes. No mention of color change in stipe.

Most Strobilomyces species stain “orange red to red” and the blackish.

Great idea to section this.

I don’t believe there is anything in the literature about a Strobilomyces that stains coral to pinkish-brown. Was this color reaction instantaneous? Was it another color before this? If there was a color change, about how long did it take to show this effect?
