Observation 105345: Boletus pallidus Frost
When: 2012-08-11
No herbarium specimen

Notes: 2.5cm cap diameter, growing from side of very rotted log in mixed forest. No bruising reactions, no KOH reactions, couldn’t get a spore print (too young?)

Recognized by sight: Looking through my old rocords I see that I had IDed similar young non-bluing boletes as B. pallidus.

My best guess for either obs (I think the two are the same) is Suillus. But this mushroom gives one so little to latch onto in the way of macro-traits. And like with your collection, Brian, no spores dropped out of mine.

Maybe if someone makes a collection of more mature specimens, we may get an idea. I’ll be unable to return to the spot where I got mine… until at least a week from now.

I did get an orange KOH reaction on the cap surface for my collection.
