Observation 105385: Gymnopus (Pers.) Roussel
When: 2012-08-15
(35.561° -84.2329° 259m)
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Found in landscaping mulch.

PILEUS diameter 2-5 cm, reddish brown, margin striate, pleated, older specimens faded to light tan. STIPE 3-6 cm long, 0.3-0.6 cm thick, tan to light brown, velvety, white basal mycelium. LAMELLAE attached, conspicuously anastomosed in larger/older specimens. ODOR putrid, of rotting garbage/rotting cabbage, probably the foulest smelling mushroom I have ever encountered.

The description matches somewhat with Micromphale foetidum, but is somewhat larger, and every picture that I have seen for this mushroom show it with a stipe that is very dark or nearly black.
