Observation 10548: Cantharellus Adans. ex Fr.
When: 2008-06-30
No herbarium specimen

Notes: These started fruiting June 30 as small, irregular-shaped yellow mushrooms that became fist-sized with the characteristic vase shape by July 10. They appeared in several areas by paths in pine woods, in several separate, enormous groups each with up to 30-40 individuals scattered in areas a few feet in radius. Unsurprisingly, somebody eventually harvested the ones in good condition around the end of July.

The particularly irregular, lobed caps, pale yellow colors, June/early July fruiting, large numbers in each cluster, and other features suggest that these are the real deal and not Hygrophoropsis aurantiacus, which is commonly darker colored, fruiting later in the season and in smaller numbers.

The large one front and center looks like it might actually be Cantharellus lateritius. Others were definitely not, with substantially more pronounced “gills”.
20326
Someone collected most of them on the weekend of August 9-10, but this one was overlooked, or perhaps ignored because it was in pretty shoddy condition.
