It sounds like this collection was made in a farm field?

Bovistella would be my be my chose for loose sandy soil, horse pastures, horseshoe pits and trails are good spots to.

with the author “(L.) Pers.” it is a synonym of Langermannia gigantea, described with a diameter of 1-2 feet.

This could be Calvatia/Handkea utriformis (Calvatia bovista sensu Kambly & Lee seems to be a synonym) – Lycoperdon utriforme now, according to IndexFungorum, Calvatia utriformis in MycoBank.
