It’s been called like that for the last 40 years (Smith & Thiers). The spores are ribbed, so it belongs to Boletellus. It’s closest relative in the East, morphologically speaking, Boletus projectellus has smooth spores that are the largest in genus Boletus.

like a frostii with an inferiority complex! :)
