Observation 10639: Suillus spraguei (Berk. & Curtis) Kuntze
When: 2008-08-09
No herbarium specimen

Notes: These are somewhat odd. Sometimes kidney-shaped with off-center stem, sometimes not. Immature ones have a red-scaly cap, but the scales separate as the mushroom grows, revealing a more buff-colored surface, and the scales themselves fade with age to be more brown than red.

Numerous, in small clusters and scattered, throughout an area of mixed woods north of the Ottawa River at an elevation of maybe 200m. Perhaps associated with pine.
