No herbarium specimen

Notes: Fertile surface of these small fruit bodies (each cap in 1 cm or smaller) appears to be covered with hypomyces. On the ground in mixed hardwoods, beech, birch, oak.

Thanks for the suggestion, Noah. Looks to be similar to the things seen in this obs. I’ll see if I can find a few more of these. Maybe the ones in this obs are young and unexpanded.

I was thinking about it, but the caps didn’t seem wavy enough when I first looked at it.
But I also missed that Dave said they were on the ground (not on wood). I think that’s a much better guess.
