Observation 106792: Tylopilus alboater (Schwein.) Murrill
When: 2012-08-20
No herbarium specimen
0 Sequences

The color on these caps was not quite the same flat black that I’m used to seeing on T. alboater. And the reddish staining on the stipe surface seems a bit unusual for this species.

Mild taste.

KOH: Cap remains dark, cap context stipe and stipe context red, mahagony on stipe surface.

I thought the caps seemed a bit dark for T. atronicotianus.

But these are young specimens, so the color may have spread out some as the caps matured. KOH reactions fit T. atronicotianus better than T. alboater. I’ll stop by the spot today and see if I can find a few.
