Recognized by sight: Fits the description quite well at Amanitaceae.org except for the copious partial veil. Could it be eroded or broken from environmental conditions?

You comments indicate it has been added to the sampling list. Has this one ever been sequenced?

The veil is not apical in this species. [EDIT]

That’s another difference with regard to my current understanding of submaculata. I’m pretty sure that the “ball gown” partial veil is related to there being no stipe above the top of the p.v. This allows the upper half of the p.v. to remain attached to the gill edges under no pressure of expansion until the lamella edge cells start to shrivel/break/decay and release the upper part of p.v. “at their leisure.”

Very best,

I’m supporting two projects interested in reddish staining species of Amanita section Validae. I’ve got a sampling list that includes submaculata. I’m going to include this material in the sampling. I’ll let you know what happens.

Very best,

Thank you for sending this material, Eric.

I’d be interested in both collections.

No odor

other than “mushroomy”. It appears that the partial veil on the unopened specimen will likely not end up as an annulus but rather hanging from the cap margin. My gut tells me they’re in section Validae. I have these as well as the A. morrisii if you’d like.

Was there any odor?

The ring is neither copious as in submaculata nor orangish or beige on the under side as in morrisii. It might be assignable to sect. Validae. A puzzle.
