I think maybe one way to distinguish is to use Kuo’s recommendation and compare the feel of the cap surface for L. lignyotus with that of L. gerardii.

But, the dark colors…

of the caps and stipes … tending toward black… suggest lignyotus to me. The widely spaced gills would seem to favor gerardii. But reported gill spacing in the various lignyotus types seems to vary quite a bit.

These two specimens do appear to lack the umbo which is often seen on lignyotus types.

I think maybe the wrinkled caps favor gerardii. Also, perhaps the short stout stature…?

which you may point out in this obs that support a high level of confidence in proposing gerardii as opposed to lignyotus? This is one of the more confusing things for me…
