Observation 10958: Leccinum Gray

No herbarium specimen

Notes: This bolete was HUGE — the cap the size of the top half of my head or so. See the last photo — that brown thing in the distance is the mushroom’s cap, visible from over twenty feet away.

Brown top, cream everything else, and in rather shabby condition. Near spruce in Acadian forest.

Recognized by sight: Stature, scabers on the stalk, color all point to Leccinum. However, you really need to show the pores and the bruising reaction to get an id.

I beleive that this one grows with hardwoods, but I wonder which ones?
