Notes: I see that Calvatia bovista is given as a preferred synonym. But the reports I have viewed of C. bovista look quite a bit different than these… or the other collections I have called C. elata. The two puffballs seen here are each under 1 inch in diameter (top part) and about 2 inches total height. A vertical cross-section shows the inner context without any seam/division between the top and the “stalk” (no photo). I left one in my yard to mature.
The ones in this obs match the Bessette/Fischer account of C. elata.
