It’s not easy. The ring can be missing from an older speciment of virginiana. The convincing element here was the relatively large, saccate volva…instead of a fragmented “piece of popcorn”… which is what the volva of __virginiana___ can often be like.

thank you! their size and caps are remarkably similar to A. virginiana but the stipe does look exannulate

did not make any collections today but i’ll search for these tomorrow

However, the stipe is exannulate and the saccate volva is large and well-formed. So I think this is probably not in sect. Caesareae. It’s a neat specimen however. We ought to try to characterize it. It might be one of my numbered taxa….
