Observation 111190: Pholiota (Fr.) P. Kumm.

When: 2012-09-23

Collection location: Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Hamilton (ham)

No specimen available

Didn’t collect, but a rust brown spore deposit from the mushroom I pulled for the gill shot can be seen fairly well on one of the caps. Flesh is white. Odor is pleasant, sort of like Gymnopilus luteus. All of the stems fused together at the bases. Appeared to be growing from tree roots. Poplar, beech, maple, oak, and black cherry seemed to be the dominant trees in the area. Caps about 3 inches across.
