was a moss covered stump, probably Hemlock but possibly white pine or birch. I find it often on birch.

Substrate for these?

All the lit says these are conifer specialists but I find this one on both Hardwoods and conifers. Eastern Hemlock in CT. AS AN ASIDE THE GOLDEN COLOR SHOWN IN THE BOTTOM PIC ALMOST ALWAYS THROWS id-ERS TOWARD a. MELLEA NTIL YOU NOTE THE SCALES on the cap and lack of yellow in the ring. Oops, didn’t mean to use caps.
