Observation 112725: Phaeolus schweinitzii (Fr.) Pat.
When: 2012-10-07
No herbarium specimen

Cluster of fungi. Width is approximately 14 inches of all sporocarps.
Unfolded penknife is almost 7 inches long, for size comparison.
Pore surface of fungi, showing some reddish to ruby-colored staining. Could be from handling. This is not an easy fungus to coax from its host cluster.
Cut section of dye-maker’s polypore, another name for Phaeolus schweinitzii, showing aqua staining on interior cut flesh plus the hymenium. I didn’t notice this color while taking the photo.
