After I took this photo, I broke the cap in half, and there was red-wine latex. It was growing in a mixed forest with hemlocks. There was more than a handful in the area.

Sure looks like L. subpurpureus.

If it’s difficult to see the red-wine latex, then pressing the cut context with a finger usually shows the color on the finger. I find this species in areas where there is hemlock.
