Here’s what Lorelei had to say about benzokauffmanii:

macroscopically, it can be recognized by drab, pinkish brown coloration on cap, med. to large size, heavily glutinous cap with incurved outer margin and inrolled edge, pale pink to violaceous white gills in youth, a stipe stuffed with firm solid pith and brownish black to dull maroon dried pileus.`
although your photo didn’t show all of these features (young gill color, for instance) the purplish tones of the cap plus the dark spots separate it handily from kauffmanni.

OK Noah, since I’m still too cheap

to put out the money for the BLM Phaeocollybia book, I’m willing to accept your P. benzokauffmanii suggestion. The online Key/photos do change my view of what P. kauffmanii is but are short on details for both. Can you expand a little?

These were large, which in the past has been one of the reasons to go with P. kauffmanii.
