Used references: Kuo’s Scleroderma Key online. S. reae is the only species which sometimes has scales near the apex, usually has a generally smooth peridium, which can also stain reddish in cracks of scales. I think this reddish appearance most closey resembles S. reae, which is further known from California and Michigan. It is important to note the peridium does not stain reddish: it is the peridium itself which is reddish.
