Observation 116511: Mycetinis scorodonius (Fr.) A.W. Wilson & Desjardin

When: 2012-11-12

Collection location: Niantic, Connecticut, USA [Click for map]

Who: Sam.Schaperow (SamSchaperow)

No specimen available

Potently smells & tastes like extra-potent white truffles, but IMHO even better [than my one white truffle experience from white truffle salt]. I have some dried (w/in little time from picking, they got dry) and some I dipped in water a little while. Hence the difference in the specimens. What is this mushroom?

These grow right on/through the bark of a live tree (branch pictured). Could it be eastern red cedar? Also, it has no fruits on it, the bark strips off vertically (like birch, but not horizontal)
