Yeah, I see, if you just do a search for the old “Suillus pictus”, only observations with the old name proposed show up. Hmmm…

But someone may not necessarily notice it or even come across it if they are just looking at observations and their old field guide. Name changes are frequently confusing for those new to biology.

MO will tell them immediately that Suillus pictus has been deprecated in favor of S. spraguei. And there is a handy comment under S. pictus explaining why.

I just find “I’d call it S. spraguei but doubt that it is S. pictus” is very bizarre and confusing. Easier to interpret the votes if the synonyms are removed.

Wrong names are still useful.
