Observation 116995: Ramalina Ach.
When: 2012-11-17
(-42.6972° -64.1619° 20m)
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Substrate: twig on dead bush, probably Quilemba — Chuquicaya avelloneda.

Habitat: Shrub steppe, primarily C avelloneda, along with some Ephedra sp., Lycium chilensis. Approximately 800m from coast. Soil silty, white. Windy. Used to be grazing land for sheep until the ¨reserve¨:http://www.fvsa.org.ar/reservasanpablo/es/index.html was founded 7 years ago.

No Ramalina sp. are recorded for official list for the Chubut Province according to de la Torre (2011). But CNALH showss that Nash collected R. celastri on Peninsula Valdes and although CNALH description and photos match for the most part, I´m struggling to find a key to Ramalina for the arid southern hemisphere so that I can make total confirmation.

Beware Ramalina. Yes, R. celastri has laminal apothecia and long broad strap-shaped branches. But this is a stressed specimen. (It’s obviously pretty rough climate for lichens there.) So don’t rule out other possibilities immediately. Not sure what those’d be, of course! :)
