I discovered a massive fruiting of Hysterangium under Abies nobilissima at a tree farm several years ago. It seldom matures all at the same time, similarly to Elaphomyces granulatus. Mature material becomes rather brittle and aromatic, resembling ripe or overripe olives to my nose.
