Observation 11792: Sarcodon scabrosus (Fr.) P. Karst.
When: 2001-11-25
No herbarium specimen

Notes: This is a rare large mushroom. Specimen reached 13 inches across cap. Didn’t take photo of spore-bearing surface. Hope someone on Mushroom Observer can jog my memory. I remember tellling one of the many mycologists at the NATS Potluck in December that year what I thought I’d found, and they told me to dry it and send it in for identification. Never got an identification back. Found near Douglas fir, Western hemlock and Lodgepole pine in hard-packed sandy soil near entrance to Cape Lookout State Park. BTW, I had the manager’s permission to look on this day.
