I know that some people have stomachs that have problems with Armillaria, but they are not dangerous to try in small amounts. Just use the caps, small and fresh ones. Aged Armillaria are often attacked by parasite fungi that could be one of many causes of illness..
What I do is to put on a kettle with water, let it start boiling, then throw in the caps for two minutes, pick them up an let them dry a bit on a paper towel.
Then fry them in oil or butter, until they are crispy and add some salt. Tastes like bacon :-)
about commenting upon edibility of mushrooms found on a continent different from the one where I live. But I do eat Armillaria mushrooms found in my area, without identifying to species. Perhaps there are only a few different species that occur in my area…? I am not certain.
There are reports that Armillaria mushrooms may cause sickness if not well-cooked. As was the custom for my Polish-American grandparents, I par-boil all Armillaria mushrooms before preparing them as part of a meal. I have a Russian friend who does the same.
