I’m thinking that there was a saccate volva.

The cap color and the colored layer on the stem that is breaking up both remind of the american taxa that get called Amanita crocea in error. I’m really not sure how many of these taxa there are. I have two provisional names that I have used: Amanita americrocea and Amanita pseudocrocea. There are photos and data on the WAO website for both these names.
