if with enough lupines around, Flammulina lupinicola could grow on other hosts.
This is a common pattern – mushrooms branching out with regard to host preference, but only within the range of their ‘core’ host.

There are perennial lupines in the area. But without a doubt, it was growing on Baccharis

Looks like they were growing on Baccharis (coyote bush), but I guess it could be Lupinus, in which case it would be F. lupinicola.
