Amanita names and checklists [edited]

Whatever the species Amanita vaginata is, it is a European species.

It would be very nice to put together an illustrated checklist of amanitas for the Arkansas, Missouri, and Indiana “region.” Several MO contributors from those three states and other, nearby states are working on such a checklist with us.

Right now, I think the best illustrated checklists for you would be a combination of the Texas and Gulf States checklist with the central Appalachian checklist that was put together for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Fungal ATBI (All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory).

The latter is currently being rebuilt.

These checklists are based on research into the organisms and years of field work…they do not repeat the contents of field guides. Hence, the mistakes are likely to be among the provisionally named and code numbered taxa (for example, giving two code numbers to the same thing). In our projects and collaborations, we constantly try to clean up our species concepts with more data from specimens new and old.

If you have a dried specimen of the species in your photographs, it would be very useful to us.

Very best,

Rod, Cristina, and Naomi
