sorry this is my first post attempt at foraging for mushrooms! so bear with me… I am obviously very nervous about ingesting something that could be deadly!
Smell: like white button mushrooms (not sure how else to describe it but i love white button mushroom! :))
Habitat: growing on the ground in woodsy area on campus. the ground was soil that was just a little damp (we just had a lot of rain but there are also sprinkler heads around this area because it’s on campus)… they were near oaks but not directly under the oaks. i couldn’t figure out what kind of trees they were under but the trees did not have a thick trunk and were more branchy. the only reason i think these are chanterelles is because a friend of mine who has since graduated and left campus told me about this spot but i was expecting them to be directly under the oaks and they were not
Gills: mainly white, with a little bit of orange/brownish interspersed.
Stem: mainly white, with a little bit of brown/orange spotting. Mostly sturdy unless the mushroom is dried out… in which case the stem is limp
Cap: White around the edges but starts to darken to light brown in the middle (some more than others and some have the brownish color all throughout the white). Smooth. Darker when drying, takes on an orange/brown color.
Bruising: Bruised a little brownish on the cap, stem, and gills.
