Observation 119953: Xylariaceae Tul. & C. Tul.
When: 2012-12-12
Who: goatshoes
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Two different types of fungus growing on a dead decidous tree. The darker one is blotchy with many tiny almost black bumps congregating to form a singular “clump” The other in question looks like greyish blothes…similar to lichen. For the sake of non confusion the main concern of this observation is the darker, blakish “clumps”. It reminds me of Sordariomycetes O.E. Erikss. & Winka but I’ve yet to see that particular fungus ball up to form single clumps like this.
