what I would call B. callistus from Peck’s hunting grounds… I have seen it in western CT and the Catskills in NY, they all had some blue or green in them, especially the stipe base, it didn’t look like this one.
See this for the B. variicolor description:
Bolbitius variicolor, B. callistus. I think most of what I see on the net for pics of B. variicolor are from Europe OR they don’t much look like what I found in CA. It seems that B. variicolor was an elevated subspecies of B. tibubans var. variicolor. Since I don’t know CA mushrooms at all and this trip to CA for NAMA was my first collecting trip there I defer to Mike Woods opinion of B. callistus for this mushroom but I’d like to hear other ideas too. It was really viscid and really beautiful.

Lead photo rocks! Zoomed details hold up nicely. Great find Bill.

I believe Else suggested B. varicolor for this which I was fine with since I had NO IDEA but I was then swayed by Mike Wood’s suggestion and the similarity to MO posts for callistus and the wholesale pics on Google images for B. callistus.
