This fruiting and the one I posted from recently are in exactly the same spot. Whatever the species, it almost certainly was introduced to the area via a chainsaw during trail maintenance about a decade ago (maybe longer).

They pop up whenever we get enough moisture. I dont have a microscope/access to one…but I do have some specimens from the recent posting that I can check out whenever I am able.

I don’t know if T. vinicolor

is likely for this one. It is reported from introduced trees, ruderal habitats, whereas Malosma is native. However it’s very different from madrone (but the occurrence of red Tubaria on Ceanothus within the range of madrone suggests that _T. punicea might have a broader host range. I’d like to see a comparison of these SoCal collections to T. punicea.

I was wrong

It is not on Rhus but rather Malosma laurina. Both species have the Ramaria sp. on them, oops.

I do have a couple that I collected, and/or could get another from the site.

Did you collect it?

Tubaria punicea is almost always on Madrone; Arbutus menziesii but I have seen it on Ceanothus at one spot (with Darvin)

It was growing on decaying Rhus integrifolia afaik. It was just down the trail from this: http://mushroomobserver.org/121015

What was this growing on?
