what wood it was growing on. To my astonished eyes (I have been in redwood forests just a few times) it appeared that there was only one species of tree. However, I have been told that madrone was there, and probably tan oak as well.

was this found on a downed redwood?
it is my understanding that Hericium erinaceus only fruits on hardwoods.
