Observation 12194: Lactarius turpis (Weinm.) Fr.

No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found associated with Paper birch in a SE Portland park. Not extremely large, but hefty/dense and probably 4-5 inches across. Cap dark muddy brown/black with tan highlights where nibbled by slugs. White gills becoming mottled greenish or brownish with age. Produces voluminous quantities of white latex which is acrid to the taste. (whew)

Recognized by sight: Lactarius sordidus is an eastern NA name. L. turpis is the introduced European species (some think L. sordidus should be lumped with L. turpis, I don’t)
