Observation 121995: Boidinia propinqua (H.S. Jacks. & Dearden) Hjortstam & Ryvarden
When: 2012-12-31

Notes: Corticoids with amyloid spores are a short list, but I’m stumped on this one. It keys to Aleurodiscus amorphus, but that is clearly incorrect as the spores are much too small. Clamps seem to be present, but are rare and difficult to see. No cystidia of any time were observed.

went back and looked at it more closely and could not find a clamp, and the gloeocystidia are there, I guess, but not very obvious. By spore size it keys right to it in the Wu and Buchanan Mycotaxon key, and the line drawings in the Can J. Res C reference fit nicely. Thanks to Karen for the suggestion.

I tried to add the authority to the name but MO didn’t like it for some reason and wouldn’t let me do it. Here is the authority from index fungorum if someone can figure out how to put it in: (H.S. Jacks. & Dearden) Hjortstam & Ryvarden

“In my keys, I usually come up with Boidinia. Most species in this genus have smallish, amyloid basidiospores. However, gloeocystidia and suburniform basidia are also present. Bodinia propinqua is also known from British Columbia. Check out Can. J. Research, C., 27: 155. 1949 for a description and illustration.” – Karen
