Recognized by sight: I would guess Gymnopilus luteofolius if this was on conifer. Still might be that species, we don’t have many (any?) other red Gymnopilus in California. Interesting find. Check spore print color and check for greenish stains on the caps and stem bases.

T. rutilans fruits on conifers and looks a bit different than these. Is this post really on Calif. Bay? That’s a hardwood so these might be Pholiota.
