Growing in dirt, under oak duff, some single, others bunched. Pines present also. Caps reddish brown, lighter toward margin, especially when young. Faintly ribbed margin on older specimens. Caps dry. Stalk tough, not hollow, ranging from 1.5 to 3.3 cm. Distinctive farinaceous odor, like generic fresh-cut wood. Some brown staining on gills when handled.
The largest mushroom’s cap was 8.7 cm across. Its stipe was 7.2 cm long and oval in cross-section (2.3 X 3.3 cm).

Mykoweb description and photos look closer to Tricholoma dryophilum (not mentioned in Arora, 2nd ed.)
