I checked these stink horn eggs for a week to see what they would produce. Nothing for seven days, then overnight the mushrooms in the photo appeared. The consistency of the adult fruit body is like styrofoam. It seems that ‘hatching’ is accomplished by some reaction the causes gas bubbles to form inside the flesh. It amazes me that it can happen so fast and still produce symmetric forms.
