I admit to using a bit of contrast enhancement, a responsible amount I hope, using my new favorite tool, Gimp 2. The variation between east and west can be overwhelming. Give me sequencing, or give me death!

Stereum hirsutum

Fresh Stereum hirsutum has been especially common and beautiful this year in central coastal California. Although the pics look a little over saturated, the orange color and general appearance looks very much like our local S. hirsutum.

the suggestion of Stereum hirsutum…, if it is right! There are definitely hairs on the top surface, but this looks like the big brother or rich uncle of what we call S. hirsutum back east. It could be a variety of same or it could be growing in the redwoods. Nice either way.
