Lactarius rubidus is not a legit name yet, although it is in the works with a new publication to make it a real name for this species. The current name for the next few months is still Lactarius fragilis var. rubidus.

since it is obviously NOT the eastern fragilis and we have a perfectly good working name that our western candy caps are known by AND L. rubidus will become official soon, I see no reason to change it. Let the change follow my lead, no need to drive ourselves nuts with those “names of the month.”
