Habitat: Top of a hill, mixed forest, cretaceous clastic rock (flysh) bedrock, in shade, partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 8-10 deg C, elevation 510 m (1.700 feet), alpine phytogeographical region.

Substratum: soil with fungi mycelium.

Place: Bovec basin, Ravelnik hill, East Julian Alps, Posočje, Slovenia EC

Comment: Obligate mycoheterotrophic non-photosynthetic orchid Neottia nidus-avis is a kind of epiparasite (the one that feeds on another parasite) since it takes energy from fungi that in turn get their energy from vascular plants in the context of a common mycorrhizal relation. Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by “V” representing a vulnerable species.
