Yes, they were stained at the base of the stipe before any KOH was applied. Also, the staining in KOH was a much brighter yellow than other species.

Did these stain yellow without KOH too? A. californicus also stains yellow in KOH, but not as strongly as A. xanthodermus and it doesn’t really stain readily without it. Sometimes it does, but not on the entire mushroom like A. xanthodermus does.
