Observation 130065: Entoloma Fr. ex P. Kumm.
When: 2013-03-09
(53.33° -2.07° )
Who: lipase

Notes: Growing in a thick patch of evergreen rhododenrons on leaf litter or soil. I thought Collybia butyracea but I don’t think I’ve seen one so black?

The first suggestion on this observation (on mushroomobserver) was Megacollybia, the second was Entoloma

The first suggestion on WAB was Entoloma too: http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/...

UPDATE: smells distinctive and strong. perhaps mealy. I don’t know what ‘coal-gas’ smells like, I’ve only read it in descriptions of Tricholoma sp. but I’d imagine it smells kind of like this. Also the cap is slightly waxy/greasy and (when dry) sticks to the lips for a fraction of a second before falling off.

UPDATE 2: Spore print light pink as expected but didn’t print very well so hard to tell

UPDATE 3: This next specimen (found on 21.04.13) was about a foot, maybe two feet away from the group of fruitbodies in my last post and was part of the same flush. At the time it was quite small so I didn’t take any photos (a mistake?). This one was a little higher up the slope and I believe was exposed to the sun more than the others, particularly since the Rhodies on the west side of the mushroom were chopped down a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps this is why it seems slightly different in colour and form?

The cap edge was notched (I didn’t notice that on earlier specimens) and the stem scurfy. The browner shade of this one might be due to the photo being taken in the evening sun directly shining on the shroom?

note brownish tint on the cap at top of photo. There were no fruitbodies nearby that could have dropped spores to make it this colour
