Phil, I did not notice either of the effects you mention. The fungi was attached to (wood), fine tree roots in a very wet soil area.. There was only one area that had a show. As you can see the Stems were quite lond also.

Ian. Was this possibly growing from fallen leaves? Did it have a swollen, hairy base?
