Starting from below is the normal way.
But it is infected. It is not C. cinerea as you can see with the white stem base.
its different the way this one is starting. When I find them, and I see several hundred a year at a local park,when it starts getting attacked it starts at the base and works it way up. lots of times I will see black colored bases and unaffected tops.
