Ok, gee, you have wasted my whole lunch hour here… need to get back to work. But interesting…
Anyway, about Agrocybe – well, I’ve seen that before, that Agrocybe needs to moved out of Bolbitiaceae, I would agree with that sorta. Looking at the ITS sequences, I made a tree comparing most “brown” spored genera, and for Agrocybe praecox and A. pediates, these were closer to Stropharia than to Bolbitiaceae, yes. Actually much closer to Psilocybe (in the current sense, not Deconica, which are closer to Tubaria or so). But there are other species of Agrocybe, like A. erebia (sp?) which look like they should still be Bolbitiaceae, and are close to Pholiotina. So, Agrocybe might be interesting, and the genus maybe should get split into two separate genera, and I forget which species is the type, to see which side continues to be Agrocybe. Does FAN6 state which is the type for the genus? I should look that up later…
This was all with stuff from GenBank, so you could download sequences yourself, and see what you think too…
But anyway, I took a look at the paper there, and it doesn’t say anything about Agrocybe, other than that they think it should not be part of Bolbitiaceae, and then they move on.
But they do mention species of Galerella, which wait a minute, what is that? I thought I knew all the brown spored species… But it seems this is a genus of light brown spored species that otherwise look more like Parasola than Conocybe, and have cap with split radially when mature. I finally found a monograph on the genus by Hausknecht from 10 years ago. (Gee it takes me awhile to catch up.) But I see to only be able to find one photo of one species online:
And this seems to be the only species that isn’t tropical in nature, this one is common enough reported from North, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa. In grass, tiny, really cute, I’d love to find one. But they also mention Galerella floriformis, were the cap breaks up radially in age, and looks like a random star-shape, with parts of the cap heading off in every direction, up, down, all around. I’d like to see a photo of that.

one clade that is not necessarily closely related to the other genera of the Bolbitiaceae. Moncalvo et al. restrict the
Bolbitiaceae to the genera Bolbitius, Conocybe, Pholiotina, and the secoid genus Gastrocybe Watling.”
Seems awfully persistent for A. molesta. It should stick to the pileus for that species, no? It would be really cool to see microscopy for this obs.
Agrocybe is not in Strophariaceae, Bolbitiaceae might be more correct, but its not as close as Bolbitius, Conocybe, and Pholiotina are.
