Notes: I received some dried samples from Dan Molter from Ohio, and got them under the scope. They were obviously a Pholiotina but uncertain which species.
The first micro-shot is of hte cap surface at 400x in Meltzer’s. Here the cap surface is clearly cellular. It looks to be a little more than a hymeniform, and is a few cells thick, not sure if this is enough to call it an epithellium.
The second micro-shot is of the gill edge at 400x in Meltzer’s. This was the best photo of the cheilocystidia, unfortunately it isn’t that good. Is show the cheilocystidia well enough, that they are lageniform and blunt to subacute ends. Not lecythiform like a Conocybe.
The third micro-shot shows the caulocystidia at 400x in KOH. The cystidia here are in nice tight clusters, mostly lageniform and subacute.
The forth micro-shot shows the spores at 1000x in KOH. Here the spores are ellipsoid, smooth, brown, thick-walled with a clear germ pore. The ave size of the spores was : length – 9.91 +/- 0.62 (err 0.13) um, width – 5.28 +/- 0.30 (err: 0.07) – q : 1.88 +/- 0.10, on 24 spores.
Also there was a number of 4-spored basidia obs.
Putting this together with Flora Agaricina Neerlandica vol. 6, one gets Pholiotina rugosa. The ave. spore size is on the large end, but still within the published range, and otherwise matches the published description rather well.
There was a little confusion between this and P. vexans, and reading the descriptions, I’m not that sure how different those species really are.
I had hopes that this one was different perhaps, since it was on wood, where P. rugosa seem to be obs. in grass mostly.
Thanks to Dan Molter for the dried samples, that were nicely preserved and sent in the mail. (Really nicely preserved, packed better than most that I see in herbarium.)
